Quin Hillyer: FEMA nominee shows that standing for principle need not be a disaster

Cameron Hamilton advanced through Senate committee Wednesday as the nominee to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency, winning an 8-4 vote from the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Hamilton was fired as FEMA's acting administrator in May 2024 after testifying that the agency should continue operating, contradicting then-President Trump's preference to eliminate it. A subsequent task force recommended reforming rather than ending FEMA while devolving some responsibilities to states—essentially aligning with Hamilton's original position—and the former Navy SEAL and State Department emergency management specialist is now positioned for full Senate confirmation.
