Amazon is open-sourcing TorchNeuron, a development tool enabling PyTorch machine-learning code to run natively on its custom Trainium AI accelerators with minimal code changes, challenging Nvidia's dominance in AI software. The tool, released Tuesday under Apache 2.0 license, allows developers to redirect workloads from Nvidia's CUDA platform by changing a single configuration line, eliminating months of rewriting typically required for non-Nvidia hardware. Amazon is also contributing upstream changes to PyTorch itself to reduce vendor lock-in, as cloud providers intensify competition over proprietary AI chips and software stacks.
