How scammers use artificial intelligence to target you

FOX13 Memphis · August 16, 2026

A Memphis man lost $400,000 in a romance scam involving AI-generated deepfakes and fake cryptocurrency investments orchestrated by foreign scammers in Southeast Asia. An investigation by FOX13 found that U.S.-developed artificial intelligence tools like Google's Gemini and ChatGPT are commonly used by scam operations in Myanmar and other remote locations to create convincing fake identities, generate messages in multiple languages, and track victim targeting. SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet is the leading service provider to Myanmar scam centers, and at least 25 new operations have been established there despite U.S. congressional scrutiny, with one in five device signals from these compounds routed through U.S.-registered companies.
