ivWatch: Innovative Technology Now Available Through UK NHS Supply Chain

ivWatch, a U.S.-based IV safety company, announced July 22 that its continuous monitoring system has been selected for the NHS Supply Chain Innovation Products pathway in the United Kingdom. The technology uses optical sensing to detect early signs of IV infiltration and extravasation — complications where intravenous fluids leak into surrounding tissue, potentially causing tissue damage and treatment delays. The expedited approval enables NHS Trusts to implement the system through a streamlined procurement route to reduce preventable patient harm.

The system provides non-invasive, real-time monitoring of tissue adjacent to peripheral IV insertion sites. NHS officials say early detection allows clinicians to intervene sooner, reducing injury risk and lowering avoidable hospital costs. Maya Aquino-Guerrero, Patient Safety Champion at NHS Supply Chain, said the technology empowers staff to act quickly and prevent complications. Initial expansion is anticipated over an 18-month period across NHS England.
