UNM breaks ground on new humanities facility

The University of New Mexico broke ground Thursday on a $130.5 million humanities and social sciences building, replacing a 1970s facility plagued by flooding and accessibility issues. The project, funded by $52 million in voter-approved bonds, $40 million in severance tax bonds, and $2 million in state general funds, is expected to open in summer 2029. The new facility will house classrooms, community spaces, and a kitchen, with nearly every UNM undergraduate required to take a class there during their academic career.
