Charleston may expand use of AI to more high-traffic intersections across city

Charleston has applied for more than $2.25 million in federal funding to expand artificial intelligence traffic management technology to 19 additional intersections across two major thoroughfares. The expansion would build on a nearly $1 million grant awarded in March 2024 to install AI cameras at nine intersections on Calhoun Street that monitor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to adjust traffic signals in real time. If approved, the project aims to create an integrated smart traffic network across the city's roadways to improve flow and reduce collisions at high-traffic areas.
