OpenAI cancels release of new artificial intelligence model over safety concerns

OpenAI announced Monday it has cancelled the release of its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after internal testing revealed it failed to meet the company's safety and alignment standards. Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, said the model did not comply with company requirements for acting in accordance with human intentions. The decision comes as AI safety concerns escalate amid competition from rivals including Anthropic and Meta, and one day before OpenAI's annual DevDay conference in San Francisco.
