Bangkok declared a ‘disaster zone’ after flooding, as rainstorms shift direction

Bangkok was declared a disaster zone after a stationary low-pressure system dumped up to waist-high floodwater on Thailand's capital and surrounding regions from Thursday through Sunday. One weather station northeast of the city recorded 213.5mm of rainfall in 24 hours. The system shifted northwest on Sunday, ending the torrential downpours.

Separately, Hurricane Nolo threatened Hawaii's Big Island over the weekend, bringing over 530mm of rainfall to northeastern areas and peak sustained winds of 85-90 knots as it passed approximately 145 miles south of the island. The system has since moved westward away from Hawaii. In the eastern Pacific, Hurricane Polo is forecast to make landfall on Mexico's Baja California peninsula late Monday as a Category 2 hurricane, with expected rainfall of 100-200mm and risks of flooding and mudslides.
