US Sen. Ed Markey wins Massachusetts Democratic primary over opponent who called for change

BOSTON — Sen. Ed Markey won Massachusetts' Democratic primary for U.S. Senate on Sept. 1, defeating Rep. Seth Moulton, who had campaigned for younger leadership in the party. The 80-year-old Markey, a congressman since 1976, prevailed despite generational pressure, backed by endorsements from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Markey, who supports Medicare for All and opposes Trump's defense budget, faces Republican attorney John Deaton in November in the heavily Democratic state.
