Man tossed into the air by ‘agitated’ bull bison was grandfather visiting Yellowstone with grandson

A 65-year-old grandfather from Washington state suffered severe injuries, including broken bones, after being tossed 8 feet in the air by a bison at Yellowstone National Park on Friday. Carl McDaniel was maintaining a respectful distance from the estimated 2,000-pound animal at Bridge Bay Campground when it charged; a photographer who witnessed the incident said McDaniel and his grandson were doing nothing wrong and were at a safe distance.

McDaniel, a community board member in East Whatcom County, was airlifted to a hospital and underwent surgery. The National Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards from bison and other large animals. The service did not confirm whether the bull's aggression was related to rutting season, which runs June through September.
