Weather Week in Review: Disasters Bring Flooding, Tornadoes and Destruction

A glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border Sunday triggered massive flooding that killed over 1,300 people and left more than 5,600 missing, though teachers evacuated approximately 1,600 students to safety before the disaster struck. Separately, flash flooding at the Grand Canyon killed two people and one remains missing, damaging a critical water pipeline and forcing stage 4 water restrictions at the South Rim. In Detroit, a rare EF-2 tornado—the first in the area in nearly 30 years—carved a half-mile-wide damage path over 3.5 miles, destroying homes and businesses while a local nonprofit provided emergency shelter.
