Senate passes funding bill to prevent shutdown through US midterms

The Senate voted 90-6 early Saturday to pass a continuing resolution funding the federal government through Dec. 11, averting a shutdown before the midterm election. The bill includes provisions freezing a White House budget office rule that would give political appointees greater authority over federal grants, a Democratic priority, and delays a ban on hemp-derived THC products until December. The legislation now goes to the House, which returns Aug. 31, after Republicans dropped a separate college-athlete compensation bill from consideration.
