American public support for unconditional U.S. backing of Israel is eroding significantly, according to recent polling and shifting congressional dynamics. A July AP-NORC survey found 58% of Democrats—including 51% of Jewish Democrats—believe the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, up 13 points since January 2024, while 48% of all Americans say the country gives Israel too much support, the highest share in nearly a decade. Progressive Democratic candidates opposing AIPAC-backed incumbents are winning primaries in New York, Colorado and Michigan, and even establishment figures like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have publicly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies.

The shift reflects generational divides across party lines. While Republicans remain largely pro-Israel, only 32% of Trump voters under 35 view the U.S. as too closely aligned with Israel's current government, compared to 11% of all Trump voters. Nearly half of Americans surveyed believe Netanyahu should face arrest on war crimes charges if he entered the U.S., signaling deepening skepticism toward Israeli leadership.
