UC San Diego launched the Center for Principled Agentic Intelligence (CPAi) on Oct. 28, 2026, an interdisciplinary partnership between its data science and arts-humanities schools to study alignment, evaluation and human oversight of autonomous AI systems. The center, co-led by researchers Mikhail Belkin and Eddy Keming Chen, will organize work around three principles: alignment with developer intent, verifiable trustworthiness, and accountability of builders and deployers. CPAi received $1 million in support over three years plus $250,000 in computing resources to develop an open-source testbed for assessing agentic AI systems and examine how training and evaluation practices affect AI behavior and human oversight.
