East Asia braces for destructive typhoon as landslides kill 15 in Philippines

Typhoon Bavi, spanning 1,000 kilometers and among the strongest storms in decades, has killed at least 15 people in landslides on the Philippine island of Mindanao and is advancing toward Taiwan, Japan, and southeastern China. The storm is expected to bring up to 1 meter of rainfall to Taiwan, where 29,000 soldiers have been placed on standby, and potentially make landfall twice in China. Across the region, hundreds of flights have been cancelled, schools closed, and residents are stockpiling supplies as authorities warn of significant destruction.
