Discovery of the century | 1,000 tons of gold coins found and the entire treasure belongs to a country

El Cronista · August 27, 2026

A deposit exceeding 1,000 tons of gold was discovered in Hunan Province, China, in the Wangu gold field at depths between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, according to the local Geological Bureau. The deposit, valued at approximately 600 billion yuan ($83 billion), comprises more than 40 gold veins with ore concentrations reaching 138 grams per ton. Chinese officials said advanced 3D geological modeling technology enabled the discovery, one of the largest found in China in recent years, and the deposit belongs entirely to China.

The discovery strengthens China's national reserves and resource security amid rising domestic gold consumption driven by middle-class expansion and demand for bullion as protection against economic volatility. Additional gold reserves are likely in areas near the main site, officials said. China produced 375.16 metric tons of gold in 2023 and consumed 1,089.69 tons domestically that year.
