Drone strike sparks massive blaze at Libya’s Zawiya refinery

A drone strike ignited a massive fire at Libya's Zawiya oil refinery, about 30 miles west of Tripoli, on Monday, according to the state-run National Oil Corporation. Firefighters battled the blaze through Tuesday as additional drone strikes hit the facility's power plant and nearby fuel storage; no casualties were reported. The attacks come amid rising tensions between the western Libyan government and a warlord controlling Zawiya, with analyst Jalel Harchaoui suggesting the cornered commander may resort to "desperate measures."

Separately, a car bomb killed Maj. Gen. Fawzy al-Mansouri, director of military intelligence for eastern commander Khalifa Hifter's forces, in Benghazi on Monday. No group has claimed responsibility for either the drone strikes on oil infrastructure or the car bombing. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to visit Libya, including both Tripoli and Benghazi, amid the ongoing violence.
