Iran holds mass funeral prayer for slain supreme leader

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians gathered at Imam Khomeini Mosalla Mosque in Tehran on Sunday for a mass funeral prayer for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies led by Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani and attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior officials. The multi-day observances, which began Friday, include a main funeral procession Monday in Tehran, ceremonies July 8 in Iraqi Shia holy cities, and a final burial July 9 at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in Mashhad. Khamenei died in what Iran attributes to U.S.-Israeli strikes that began February 28.
