Off-duty JMPD officer allegedly kills colleague during Soweto domestic dispute

An off-duty Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officer fatally shot a female colleague on Sunday, June 28, 2026, in Soweto after a domestic dispute. The suspect officer fired seven shots at a vehicle carrying her girlfriend, whom the deceased officer was helping transport away from the scene. The suspect was arrested immediately; the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has taken over the investigation.

The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. in Protea Glen, Glenridge Ext 16, with the vehicle sustaining extensive damage to its front and rear windows. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the South African Police Service responded and registered a murder case.

The identities of both the suspect and deceased officer are being withheld pending court appearance and family notification, respectively. The JMPD said it is cooperating fully with investigators to ensure justice is served.
